Rossall School News – Michaelmas – 2021 Week 5

Across hill and dale, by foot and on quad bikes, Rossall students stride out. While back on campus a wealth of music, film and performance abounds.
Floreat Rossallia!

FROM THE HEADMASTER

The murder of Sarah Everard shocked a nation that was just beginning to emerge from a pandemic. The fact that her attacker was a Metropolitan Police Officer has served to both intensify public anger and diminish trust; the vital currency of effective policing. As a father of three young daughters, it troubles me that young women in the twenty-first century still experience gender based violence. Just yesterday, the Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss opined that, ‘I do think as women, generally, we are more fearful of going out and that is fundamentally wrong’. That is a desperately sad state of affairs…

MESSAGE FROM THE

Dear Parents,

It was a pleasure on Thursday to welcome so many of you to our first Parents’ Forum for nearly two years. Listening to all stakeholders within a school community is paramount to the continuing success of our School and I was delighted to hold such positive discussions over many elements of School life. Thank you to all those who found the time to attend what proved to be a hugely successful evening.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Practise Expedition

Facing the ever changing weather of the British Isles Year 11 embarked on their Silver DofE practise expedition to the Yorkshire Dales.

The purpose of this practise weekend is to empower the participants and prepare them for assessment.

Day one was a shock for many as they hadn’t walked the distance or over the terrain carrying all their kit, however everyone dug in to complete it and the everything required to pass was evident by the end of day two.

Getting to Know Our Graduate Musician in Residence

Lucy Mullin is a 2021 graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music where she studied Vocal Studies and Opera under the tutelage of the world-renowned soprano, Eiddwen Harrhy.

Outside of performing, Lucy has a passion for music outreach work, as a member of the RNCM Learning and Participation Department she helped to bring music to people in Greater Manchester who had little access to it before.

  • If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I would love to go interrailing across Europe, looking at the different cultures and history.

  • If you were an animal, what animal would you be and why?

I think I would be a panda because I could sleep and eat all day!

  • What three things can you not live without?

Chocolate, a good cup of tea and my family/friends.

  • If you could join a famous band/pop group, which one would you join?

I think it would have to be the Spice Girls – how fun would it be to dance on stage to their music every night?

  • What would you like to achieve at Rossall?

I would like to get everyone involved in some kind of music. It is so good for your mental health as it is a huge stress reliever. Music is so much more than classical music and I want people to understand that if you chat with your friends then you can sing.
