MICHAEL HOLDSWORTH
DIRECTOR OF PERFORMANCE STUDIES

Michael Holdsworth is a lecturer, researcher, performer, producer and co-founder of a theatre company. Michael is joining us in September 2023 as Director of Performance Studies.

Michael is currently undertaking a PhD at Lincoln University exploring the intersection between the Musical Theatre Chorus and the Crowd Phenomenon, Mob Mentality and Group Behaviour in the development of a new pedagogy.  

DAWN HARRIS
DIRECTOR OF BROADWAY ACADEMY
HEAD OF DANCE

Dawn Harris, who heads up our Performing Arts Signature Programme and is also our Head of Dance, has a wealth of industry experience as a professional choreographer and Musical Theatre practitioner. 

Dawn appeared in the 2004 movie ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ and has toured as a dancer with artists such as Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams, and Lisa Scott-Lee (Steps).

Adam Dobson, our Director of Music, has worked as a musical director in the UK, Germany and America, directing music for shows such as ‘Into the Woods’, ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, and ‘The 12 Tenors’.

David Newell, our Head of Drama, is a graduate of the Vancouver Film School and has, previously, taught at both the Tring Park School for the Performing Arts and Guildford School of Acting (University of Surrey). 

BTEC PERFORMING ARTS

WHAT ARE THE AIMS OF THE COURSE?

The Musical Theatre Level 3 Extended Diploma programme is an exciting course that develops technique & performance skills in:

  • Singing
  • Dancing
  • Acting

These skills will be integrated into performances, through a range of different styles & approaches. It provides future West End stars with a path to higher education courses, or vocational training in the industry. Students will have workshops with professionals & coaches. They will also engage with work experience and present performances.

WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?

Students will participate in units ranging from dance, acting & singing through to learning about the business side of show business. The course is a mixture of practical modules along with relevant theory & academic inquiry.

Students will analyse practical work in written evaluations & write essays on texts & practitioners relating to historical and contemporary musical theatre.

HOW IS IT ASSESSED? 

The course is assessed through both ongoing coursework and practical performances. There are internal and external assessments, including written examinations. 

ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

All students need to have at least five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above (and a satisfactory school reference) in order to be accepted.

Students will also be required to audition and be interviewed by the Director of Musical Theatre.

WHY IS IT A USEFUL QUALIFICATION?

The course is ideal for performers who want to develop their skills in acting, singing and dance.

The course will prepare you for applications to prestigious musical theatre schools and university courses.

TASTER DAY

Students in Years 10 and 11 are invited to join us on Tuesday 20th June to experience the BTEC Performing Arts course at Rossall Sixth Form. 

The day will involve a workshop from

CURRENTLY PLAYING CATHERINE OF ARAGON IN SIX THE MUSICAL

Nicole Lewis trained locally, at Blackpool and the Fylde College. 
Credits whilst training include: Danielle in Bring It On; ChaCha in Grease; Hot Blades Harry in Urinetown.
Theatre credits includes: Swing/ Ensemble and First Cover Nabulungi in The Book of Mormon (UK & International tour), Ensemble First Cover Effie White in Dreamgirls.

4.00pm – Pick up including the opportunity to speak to the Performing Arts and Admissions teams

SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDY AT ROSSALL SIXTH FORM

Rossall School offers scholarships in the individual disciplines of music and drama. Broadway Academy scholarships are also offered to students whose talents cover acting, dancing and singing.
