Chemistry Society - Thea Y12
Over the last two weeks, the Chemistry Society hosted two engaging and educational events for students in years 10 and 11. From advanced IB and A-Level practicals to exciting demonstrations for younger students, there has been something for everyone to enjoy!
On January 14th, future IB students explored the practical ‘the determination of the percentage of calcium carbonate in an eggshell’ using back titration—a technique useful when direct titration isn’t possible. This experiment provided a hands-on introduction to an essential analytical method, deepening students’ understanding of chemical reactions and stoichiometry.
The following week, on January 21st, students got a taster of A-Level Chemistry by synthesizing an organic liquid. Using separation and distillation techniques, they successfully produced a haloalkane, a key compound in organic chemistry. This practical allowed students to develop their skills with lab equipment and gain insight into the skills and techniques used in A-level chemistry.
The Chemistry Society welcomes all students in years 10 and above who are interested in hands-on science. Whether you’re an experienced chemist or just curious about the subject, come along to our future events and discover the wonders of chemistry!
