With Love From Chapel - Lent Term - Week 11

Have you ever seen one of those memes that make you feel really old?

“Someone said ‘30 years ago’ and I thought they meant the 70’s - but they actually meant 1995 - and now I need to lie down!”

That’s me! And while I enjoy reminiscing about landline phones, VHS tapes and MacGyver, occasionally, I wonder how much has changed in our world - for the better.

Last week, we had the pleasure of some fantastic students performing GREASE for us all - a fabulous musical, full of fun and great tunes. I know and enjoy every single line, sing them loudly when no one listens and, being a child of my own time, never thought about it any more than that.

Until I got told by my daughter and her friends that Danny is ‘such a red flag guy’ and that the ‘end is all wrong’!

I was rather taken aback by this analysis of an epic love-story, which - according to many of our current students - isn’t all that romantic anymore. Fun, yes, but not romantic. And they are actually right! Totally right!

‘Summer Nights’ would give enough material for an entire half-term of ‘consent-education’, and Danny might bemoan that he was left ‘stranded in the drive-in’, but most young people nowadays would say he can count himself lucky that his behaviour wasn’t documented all over social media by Sandy and left him ‘cancelled’.

As much as it might make me feel old, I learn so much from the boys and girls in school - and I really should not be surprised. After all, the Bible is full of amazing young people who are chosen by God because of how they see the world and stand up for themselves:

  • David comes to mind - with his willpower and determination

  • Mary, who coped with becoming a mother in the most bizarre of circumstances

  • Samuel was chosen by God at a very young age to become the most amazing prophet.

  • Daniel, Esther, Joseph ….

Young people have always changed the world with their sharp minds and their fresh perspectives, and we need to make sure we learn from them as much as possible.

Do I enjoy GREASE any less? On the contrary: I still love every tune and every word - but I love even more how it has opened up lots of great questions and chats!

With this in mind:

Tell me more!
