On Monday 14th November students of Drama and Theatre Studies attended the eagerly-anticipated touring theatrical production of The Shawshank Redemption.
Keen to see how the Oscar-nominated hit film would translate to the stage, the audience were not left disappointed. Innovative use of staging transformed the Winter Gardens stage into a prison cell-block and clever lighting allowed the audience to be transported to the prison grounds – and even to Mecico! – for the outdoor scenes.
The superb acting ensured that the audience was gripped from the start and the impact of the harrowing, violent scenes was truly shocking.
The performance was enjoyed by all and has led to some very interesting classroom discussions on the art of theatrical adaptations with students debating how they would have done things differently.
