PROFESSOR SAUL BECKER (FALCON 71-77)

Professor Saul Becker (Falcon 1971-77) is Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of College of Social Sciences at the University of Birmingham and Professor of Social Policy and Social Work.

Saul has previously held Chairs at Loughborough, Birmingham and Nottingham Universities and was Head of the School of Sociology and Social Policy at Nottingham for nearly five years, where he was also Faculty Director of Research for the Social Sciences and Assistant Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Internationalisation. He was the Chairperson of the UK Social Policy Association for four years and is is renowned internationally for his pioneering research and work on young carers (children and young adults who provide care for other family members).

Saul is also a Fellow of the UK’s Academy of Social Sciences and of the Royal Society of Arts. He is a member of the REF2014 Sub-panel 22 for Social Work and Social Policy and is the Founding Series Editor for the Policy Press ‘Understanding Welfare’ book series. Saul is also a qualified and Registered Social Worker.
