Rossall School students achieve over 2/3s A*/A grades at A level

Twins achieve 12A* and 9As

Rossall School’s reputation as a centre of academic excellence received yet another boost with the publication of A Level results and the Rossall Diploma results this week.

This outstanding set of results follows swiftly on the heels of a record-breaking year for students pursuing the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

Indeed, the results achieved by all Upper Sixth students at Rossall this year confirm its place as a regional leader within the North West.

The School’s commitment to excellence serves to support and inspire Rossall Sixth Formers and furthermore, the School’s strategy of headhunting world-class teachers from within the UK and overseas serves to ensure that the quality of teaching and learning within the Sixth Form is second to none.

All entries from almost a third of all academic departments achieved nothing less than an A grade including English Literature, Geography, German, Spanish, Chinese, Music and Theatre Studies.

A huge number of students achieved a clean sweep of ‘A*’s and ‘A’s this summer and whilst there is much to celebrate as a School, it is the individual success stories that mean so much to staff, parents and pupils.

Headmaster Delighted with students’ achievements

Reflecting upon this year’s results, Headmaster Jeremy Quartermain remarked,

“I am incredibly proud of our Upper Sixth Form students. The outstanding results they have achieved are indicative of the resilience that they have demonstrated throughout the most challenging of times.

“These results are very well deserved and we are thrilled that so many of our students are progressing to academically rigorous courses at elite universities within the UK and overseas.

“I would like to pay tribute to our brilliant teachers who successfully inspired our students to learn right throughout the national lockdowns.

“Most importantly, Sixth Formers leave Rossall as confident, compassionate and creative young people and this serves to complement their superb intellectual achievements and high professional aspirations.

“There is a special synergy that occurs within Rossall Sixth Form and as much as we celebrate a set of results which serve to place us amongst the very best of schools within the UK; these grades are just one aspect of a holistic educational offering that  routinely inspires excellence.”

Superb performance in Rossall Diploma exams prepares students effectively for university

For the second year running, the School exercised its independence by running its own Diploma Programme to ensure that all students had the opportunity to sit rigorous examinations before progressing to university in the Autumn.

Senior Deputy Head, Dina Porovic commented,

“The Rossall Diploma exams were written to reflect and replicate the rigorous nature of A-Level examinations and, as such, performance in these is comparable to what our students would most likely have achieved had they been permitted to sit their exams.

“This was evident in both the breadth of the syllabus assessed and the depth and challenge of the questions set; in the vast majority of subjects, students completed their A-level courses fully and were assessed on all aspects covered.

“As such, the preparation for and superb performance in these examinations will ensure the best possible start for their university courses ”

Over 60% off to Russell Group or Top 20 universities

This cohort of students has secured university places at some of the most prestigious institutions in the UK and Overseas.

The School anticipates that over 60% percent of Sixth Form students will be attending Russell Group or Top 20 universities, whilst a number have been awarded full sports scholarships to top institutions in the USA.

Students are progressing to Imperial College London, King’s College London, University of Bristol, University of Warwick, University of Leeds, University of Manchester and Durham University; pursuing subjects as diverse as Medicine, Economics, Politics, Computer Science, English, Architecture and Chemistry.

No fewer than four students will be taking up places to study Medicine. Erin Bradbury, Will Jackson and Sam Currie will be taking up places at Queen’s University, Belfast, the University of Leicester and the University of East Anglia respectively, whilst Nino Abesadze has been awarded a 100% scholarship to read Medicine at the prestigious Charles University, Prague.

Nino commented, “I feel delighted. I was very happy with my results and am thankful to all of my teachers for their dedication and hard work.

“They helped me massively and not only am I thankful to my science teachers for their help outside of homework tasks, I could also discuss Chemistry Olympiad problems with them.

“This year, I finally won a bronze medal in the International Chemistry Olympiad (ICHO), becoming a world-class Chemist.”

From Mercedes Benz to Chicago State University – Rossall students fulfilling their dreams

Taking up full scholarships in the United States are golfers Kieran Hogarth and Lydia Cryer. Kieran will be heading to Chicago State University whilst Lydia has been awarded a highly competitive scholarship to study at Indiana University, Bloomington.

Kieran said, Rossall has given me opportunities and an experience which I would not have had anywhere else. It has provided me with friends from all different backgrounds and cultures across the globe.

“Furthermore Rossall has opened doors and possibilities like no other which has put me in the position I am in now to continue my journey.

“The teacher’s endless amount of support and hard work has been key to learning the correct information and exam techniques in order to obtain high-level results.

“I would just like to say a massive thank you to all the staff across the school for their commitment, dedication and persistent hard work they have given to each pupil in Year 13 over the past two years.”

Rossall is a school with a global outlook and this is reflected in students’ destinations which are increasingly international. Along with the Czech Republic and the United States, students will be studying in locations including Dubai, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands.

Whilst the vast majority of students who leave Rossall will take up places at top universities, students are increasingly exploring alternative options and Georgia Bowling will be taking up a place on Mercedes Benz’s highly competitive Financial Services Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship Scheme.

Georgia said, “The prospect of earning whilst learning and gaining vital experience is the reason I chose an apprenticeship. I hope this will lead me to become a manager or accountant at a reputable firm.”

Stephan and Thierry Bilby, our fourth set of twins are excitedly looking forward to beginning their RAF careers.

The Headmaster, Jeremy Quartermain concluded:

“We will miss this utterly brilliant year group and we wish them all the best for the future.”
