A full complement of stellar results at Rossall School with another bumper year of top GCSE grades

Following on from the excellent results achieved by Rossall’s Sixth Formers in their A Level, BTEC and IBDP examinations, this week it has been the turn of Year 11 pupils to celebrate their success.

With a number of outstanding performances from individuals, the cohort as a whole celebrates the best 7 - 9 or A* / A rate from public examination results achieved by Rossall pupils, continuing a year on year rise. Well over half of the cohort achieved a grade 7 - 9 or A* / A grade in a number of subjects including Art, English Language, English Literature, German, Spanish and RS.

Amazingly, the number of top grades  (7-9s or A*/As) achieved at Rossall is almost 80% higher than the national average - despite the fact that a good number of students within the cohort were taking examinations in their second, or even third, language. Particularly pleasing is that from a value-added perspective, Rossall has knocked the ball out of the park.

Senior Deputy Head, Dina Porovic, observed:

Rossall’s outstanding results are a testament to the hard work, resilience and determination of our young people. They underscore the ethos of endeavour and ambition that a Rossall education inspires. These results are also a source of great pride for our wonderful teachers whose dedication and investment in the development of our pupils inside and outside the classroom has ensured that they are able to fulfil and exceed their considerable potential.

A Rossall education is so much more than the exam results achieved. Nevertheless, results such as these are reflective of an intellectually dynamic, endlessly ambitious and culturally enriching learning environment.

Rossall is famed for its sporting achievements and prowess in the performing arts. However, the pursuit of academic excellence lies at the heart of School life. This summer, well over 80% of Upper Sixth Formers studying in the UK will progress to Top 20 university destinations including Cambridge, Imperial College London, York, Warwick, Edinburgh, Manchester and Durham to study an incredibly wide and inspirational range of courses. A considerable number of students are off to the United States to take up 100% sports scholarships whilst others have won places on prestigious degree-apprenticeship programmes such as Fujitsu and BAE Systems.

Director of Sixth Form, Nick Crombie, is looking forward to welcoming this year’s incoming Year 12 cohort. He contends that, ‘the phenomenal success of Rossall Sixth Form is attributable to a remarkable body of staff who are completely invested in the lives of our students.’  He continues, ‘’We are excited to welcome another talented and ambitious cohort into the Sixth Form, where our returning students will be joined by some of the most impressive people from around the UK and across the world.

An impressive number of pupils achieved a clean sweep of top grades with Yesenia, Toluwani, Leona, Keira and Betsie-Blossom each amassing ten or more grade 7 - 9s.A significant proportion of the cohort boast over half of their grades being nothing lower than a grade 7. Of course, it is the individual success stories that matter most; we are incredibly proud of our students who have shown exceptional resilience and courage in the face of personally challenging circumstances or the impact of war and nevertheless, have achieved excellent results.

For many pupils these results sit alongside extensive commitments beyond the classroom, contributing to our rich co-curricular programme and taking part in the School’s signature programmes including the Piano Academy, the Broadway Performing Arts Academy, as well as participating in the hugely successful sports programmes including signature Football and Golf.

Yesenia achieved an impressive eleven grades at grade 7 or above with 9s in English Literature, German and Latin . Yesenia is planning to study A Levels in Latin, History, Politics and Economics and has set her heart on pursuing Law at university.

Yesenia reflected:

Rossall gives so many opportunities for young people to excel in the field that they are interested in. There is a large range of subjects and clubs you can be a part of to further your knowledge.

I am definitely very pleased with my results. It has taught me a lot about how to revise, how to stay focused and how to not get stressed during exam season.

Leona has had an outstanding summer having achieved ten grades at grade 7 or above. Notably, she has been commended for achieving one of the highest results in the country for her stunning work in Art & Design GCSE.

Leona was delighted with her grades and commented:

I’m looking forward to joining Rossall Sixth Form because of the teachers that go above and beyond to help you get the best grade. The people at Rossall make you feel so welcome.

I am very proud of the results I achieved today. My results range from 7-9 and with these grades I hope to study A Level Art, Psychology, and Biology so as to then hopefully go to University to study Radiology.

Following a stellar performance in his GCSEs, Zach is now intent on studying the International Baccalaureate at Rossall School. His superb grades, nine of which were a grade 7 or above will stand him in excellent stead to make the most of a Sixth Form pathway that is academically rigorous and continues to nurture learning across all disciplines.

Zach commented:

My biggest highlight has been playing golf and improving in that area.

In areas such as Maths and Science, the teachers will always come and help you after school if you ask for it. They’ll sit down with you and show you the things you need to do and improve, which was really helpful to me especially when I was trying to do more advanced learning and do things outside the syllabus.

My big goal is to work in Astrophysics and Quantum Physics, understanding particles and the way they work and how this affects the universe and what the universe is made of.  We know nothing about that right now and even if I can help understand 1% of it that, it would be a massive achievement and I believe that it would help me fulfil my purpose.

Toluwani achieved nothing lower than a grade 7 across her eleven GCSEs whilst maintaining an exceptionally busy schedule outside of lessons too. As an academic scholar and a member of the Chapel Choir she has contributed hugely to the intellectual life of the school.

Toluwani commented:

I am very excited about joining the Farrell Society in the Sixth Form as this is something I’ve been waiting for and because I have loved my English lessons to date. Mr McNab has been an inspirational teacher and always helped me with my coursework, especially when I wasn’t getting my targeted grades.

I am very, very grateful and very, very happy. I feel hard work pays off and I feel the support I have had from Rossall has helped me come a long way.

Comment from the Head of Year 11

Richard Catterall, Head of Year 11 also commented:

I am delighted that students in Year 11 have risen to the challenge of their first set of public examinations in securing results they should be justifiably proud of. I have thoroughly enjoyed supporting them all this last year and look forward to seeing them go on to thrive in their future courses. I hope they feel enormously proud of themselves.

A small number of scholarships and bursaries are still available for outstanding students.
