Rossall Scholarship FAQ’s

The Rossall Scholarship deadline is on Friday 22nd November so it’s not too late to get your applications in! We recently sat down with our Senior Registrar Mr Jonathan Cohen to discuss all things Scholarships and Bursaries.

Scholarships provide a unique opportunity to students so don’t miss out on the chance to apply and find where you belong with Rossall.

What actually are scholarships?

“So a scholarship is an award that is made to pupils who are exceptionally talented in a particular activity or discipline.”

What sorts of scholarships are available at Rossall?

“Here at Rossall Scholarships are available for pupils who are exceptionally talented in one or more of the following areas:

  • Academic

  • Sport – generally, and specifically in Football and Golf

  • Performing and Creative Arts – specifically in Drama, Musical Theatre, Music, Piano and Arts and Design.”

Who can apply for scholarships?

“Our standard scholarship programme is only open to UK passport holders, currently resident in the UK, applying for a place in Year 7, Year 9 or Year 12 of the forthcoming academic year. We can consider ad hoc applications from international pupils, mid-year joiners or pupils seeking to join other year groups, but only as part of an ongoing general application for a place at Rossall.”

How can I apply for a scholarship?

“Applications can be made using our online Rossall School Scholarship Application Form

Can you apply for more than one scholarship?

“Yes. All pupils are automatically assessed for an academic scholarship as part of their entrance testing but further applications can be made in other areas. However, we do ask parents to be realistic in their applications. Scholarships are awarded to exceptionally talented pupils and it is very rare indeed that a pupil is exceptionally talented in more than two or three areas.”

How are scholarships assessed?

“All pupils that join Rossall are asked to complete assessments in English, Mathematics and Verbal and Non-Verbal cognitive reasoning. They are also interviewed by a senior member of the academic team at Rossall. Those pupils who perform exceptionally well may qualify for an academic scholarship.

Pupils who wish to be considered for non-academic scholarships are required to provide supporting evidence of their excellence in their chosen areas and to complete a related assessment.”

When do those assessments take place?

“Once all applications have been received, pupils are invited to attend assessment days that take place on Saturdays in mid to late January.”

When are the outcomes of the assessments made available?

“We try our best to inform families of the outcomes by the start of the February half term.”

What are the scholarships worth?

“Being a scholar confers status – Rossall scholars are our pacesetters and role models, admired for their exceptional talents and the contributions they make to the Rossall community. Scholarships also offer a defined percentage reduction in school fees. In some circumstances, they can offer additional benefits, such as reduced-cost access to related optional activities. Reductions in school fees can range from 0% for honorary scholarships and up to 50% for exceptionally talented pupils. Typical awards tend to be around 20%.”

What if school fees are still unaffordable, even with a scholarship award?

“In such circumstances, families may be invited to make a Bursary application. These are means-tested awards where an applicant’s income, expenses, assets and liabilities are assessed to determine how much a family could realistically afford to pay in school fees. Bursary awards are made in addition to any scholarship award that is made. For example, a 50% bursary award could be made on top of a 30% scholarship award to give total fee remission of 80%.”
